Running your own business sounds perfect and it can be, but it can also be tough!

I have spoken to business owners at networking meetings who are overwhelmed with everything involved with running a business. They often find that the part they enjoy the most, ie creating or making something often becomes a smaller part of the day. This can turn to frustration especially if you are trying to get your head around accounts, your website or social media.

I never thought when I was working in London, that I would ever need to create my own website or need to understand accounts, self-assessment or social media and marketing.


Here are some tips that I have found useful that may help you with managing your workload
Plan ahead

Take time out at the end of the day to write your to-do list for the next day. Plan what tasks need to be actioned first. Planning ahead means you will be ready to start the day with a plan of action.

Focus on one thing at a time

Having a big project is great but can be overwhelming, where to start?! Have a look at the tasks and break them down into smaller bite-size projects. Taking it one step at a time will make it easier and achieving mini milestones will motivate you to keep going!

Avoid distractions

If you need to concentrate on a task, turn off anything that may distract you. Putting your phone to silent and turning off email pop-ups will enable you to focus fully on the task at hand. Don’t forget to log out of Facebook and other social media accounts.

Take a break

When you have finished a task, take time out to go for a walk, make a cup of tea or listen to some music. Taking time out will mean you will feel energised and refreshed and ready for the next task. Take advantage of any downtime as you know that the next busy spell will be coming around anytime soon.


If you are spending time on tasks that you don’t enjoy and would rather be working with your clients and developing your business. Consider delegating these tasks to a Virtual Assistant, Accountant, Graphic Designer or Web Designer.

It is easy to get overwhelmed with your workload which can have an impact on your productivity. Take a step back, deep breath, look at your list, focus and get back on track.
