I am so excited that the new and improved Willow Admin website is now live!
I had not been happy with my old website for quite some time. The time had come for me to have a website where I could actually have control and update and edit when I wanted.
“If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” – Albert Einstein
Now I knew nothing about websites, domains, hosting etc and I spent a LOT of time researching.
As a member of a couple of Virtual Assistant groups on Facebook, many recommended WordPress for creating a website while others recommended Wix or Weebly.
I would suggest that you spend some time researching websites and choose whatever platform you feel comfortable with. There are many websites created using Wix, Weebly and Squarespace and they all look great.
I decided to go with WordPress and signed up for the Build a WordPress course by The Techie Mentor. It was a good course and I enjoyed the webinars, making lots of notes but did feel overwhelmed with it all and out of my depth! Luckily we were able to save the webinars so I could revisit in my own time which I found useful.
Learning a new skill
I signed up for a few webinars, got a WordPress sandbox, took a deep breath and off I went! I found a free theme that I liked, installed it and starting adding the content. Then decided I wasn’t too happy with the theme and found another to try. This happened a few more times before I finally settled with the theme that I was happy with. It is also good to know that if I want to change the theme in the future, I can.
I remember looking at websites thinking ‘WOW they look great’ and ‘mine looks rubbish’. But I soon stopped doing that after I realised that it was important not to compare. I was also aware that a few Virtual Assistants had had their websites copied by others in the industry practically word for word which is not cool at all.
It did take me quite a while to get to the stage where my new website was live. Mainly because I had to deal with domain transfers from my old web designer. Sorting out website hosting which I thought was going to be difficult and stressful, was pretty straightforward.
I have had fun learning a bit about WordPress, domain transfers and website hosting and I am really happy with my first attempt at creating a website. It is has been a great learning process and I am looking to developing my WordPress knowledge and skills even more!
If you are thinking about learning a new skill, go for it! What have you got to lose?
